The Sobriety Rollercoaster I’ve made it. 365 days without a single drop of alcohol. No wine, lager, Prosecco or ginThat’s a Christmas, New Years Eve, my 40th birthday, lots of sunny weekend evenings that I’ve not had a drink. I think the last 2 months have been the absolute hardest. That’s when your brain starts telling you that you weren’t that bad, it’s not a big deal, you could probably drink and be ok. But I tried that. I’m all or nothing. Twice I’ve done 100 days dry to reset me, moderate, put rules in place, only drink at weekends, no wine, just lager or gin and tonic. If you have to make that many rules, you aren’t controlling your drinking, it’s controlling you. So many people have said ‘but you weren’t THAT bad’ but I feel it was only a matter of time. Being a high functioning wine lush no longer served my mental or physical health. The problems that you’re drinking to escape from are only still there the next morning and you just feel worse for it. One year down… forever to go.
